Cinderella Century on Saturday, April 6!

ban_233

The 37th edition of the venerable Cinderella Century takes place on Saturday, April 6. This ride can bring out as many as 2,500 participants and is probably the largest women-only ride in the country, if not the world. Last year’s ride was bombarded with heavy rain and horrific, near-horizontal winds. But this year’s prolonged drought is making it look like it will be a delight time (well, at least for cyclists). Riders can do the 65-mile metric “Classic” or push their limits with the 95-mile “Challenge.” Both rides explore the Livermore and San Ramon valleys. Registration is still open but if you’re at all interested in doing the ride, don’t delay as the Cinderella can sell out. To request a registration form, point your browser to this site: http://valleyspokesmen.org/email.php?email=cinReg

Despite never having ridden the Cinderella, I have always been a big supporter of this ride. Roger and I are also members of Valley Spokesmen (sic), the sponsoring club, and we have worked the event for years, usually doing registration. Like AIDS LifeCycle, the Cinderella Century is more than just having a good time; a significant portion of the proceeds is donated to women’s organizations throughout the Bay Area including the Women’s Cancer Resource Center, Big Sisters of the East Bay, Stand Against Domestic Violence, and Planned Parenthood. So, it’s a fundraiser as well albeit on a different model than LifeCycle.

Although boys can’t ride, they can participate by volunteering to help put the event on. The Valley Spokesmen puts out an annual appeal to its members and it seems to get enough volunteers, perhaps just barely. But it certainly won’t hurt to contact them if you are eager to help out. You can contact the team at: http://valleyspokesmen.org/email.php?email=cin

Different Spokes has for years put on its own ride, the Evil Step Sisters, on the same day, a romp over Mt. Tam. It’s not on the ride calendar yet but hopefully someone will step forward to lead it this year.

Medicine of Cycling Six Week Class

Evan Kavanagh passes along this flyer and information about a six week class for the public called “The Medicine of Cycling” featuring expert physicians, psychologists, trainers, and specialists covering important concepts for cyclists like bike fit, metrics, psychology, nutrition, and of course aches and pains! The course was adapted from professional education programming for sports medicine physicians and will be very high quality, but still accessible for a public audience.

Registration is discounted to $60 until February 1st for the six-lecture series. He has already signed up for the series which starts February 28th and runs thru April 4th, at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus from 7-8:45pm.

Evil Step Sisters

April 5th DSSF had our own metric century — the Evil Stepsisters timed to coincide with the Cinderella Classic, with Michael S, Joe H, Ann D, Wanderson, Jeff P and Erik L. It was a real pleasure to have
Marty C. join us. Marty said he hadn’t been on his bike in nearly a year. He’d been at a Battlestar Gallatica season-opener party the night before. He started talking to Michael. Got inspired and got up
at the crack of dawn game for taking on Mt. Tam.

The route is the Alpine Damn loop and we took the Fairfield first route. The group was small and stayed fairly close together. We had a pit stop at Ruilli Gran Cafe in Larkspur, where we picked up some food and another at Fairfax.

It was a great day for riding — sunny but pleasantly clear and cool.

Lunch at the dam was a tranquil as usual. Alpine Dam is such a peaceful place. Climb up Mt Tam — check. But the seven sisters were the real evil stepsisters on this ride. Big. Ugly and Hostile.

Little did we know that during this time Roger C and Will B were leading a later ride hoping to catch up to us. Apparently, they just missed us at the PanToll station but Schmuki was able to have a coffee with them when they met up a Peet’s.

Tuesday After Work Ride-Fall/Winter Route

September is the last month of the spring/summer Castro to the ocean route for the Tuesday After Work Ride!

Starting Tuesday, October 3rd, the Tuesday After Work ride begins the fall/winter route, from the Ferry Building to the ocean.

There will be night riding and, therefore, lights are very important, but please don’t miss the ride just because you’re out of batteries or you haven’t bought a light yet. If you don’t have one, contact the ride leader. There are usually spare lights to lend.

The spring/summer route from the Castro to the ocean will resume in April.

Team Different Spokes AIDS/LifeCycle Fundraising Party – Sat 3/18

Where does the time go?! AIDS/Lifecycle 5 is fast approaching – in early June we’ll be on our way to LA!

This year, 18 members of DSSF bike club have formed TEAM DIFFERENT SPOKES and we’re hosting a fundraising party. All contributions will benefit the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and their ongoing effort to provide critical AIDS and HIV services. Donations can be made through our team page or fill out a form at the party (cash, check & credit cards accepted).

We invite you all to join us on Saturday, March 18th from 4:00 – 8:00 PM. The party will be held at the home of Michael Schmucki at 253 Sanchez Street #1 in San Francisco. There will be plenty of tasty hors’doeuvres/finger food, drink, chat & good cheer – and a raffle, too!

Everyone is welcome to invite friends/guests/family who will support our efforts – just let us know how many heads to expect so we can plan accordingly. Need an eVite to respond to? Email: rides@dssf.org
