Saddle Challenge 2011 – Update #2

After more than three weeks into the challenge (and the weather is certainly making this challenging), Gordon Dinsdale has edged out Danni Mestaz, both in miles completed and percent complete. But not by much; with identical mileage goals, 500 miles each, Gordon has logged 412 miles and Danni is on his rear tire at 374 miles. And not far behind them, David Goldsmith has logged 328 miles.

The miles champion for one day goes to Larry L’Italien, with 103.8 miles, with William Bir in second with 100.4 miles. Congratulations to you both, centuries completed in March!

Gordon has also rode the most days, 19 days out of 22.

Other stats:
1993 miles have been ridden so far.
The two biggest days are Saturday the 5th with 438 miles, and Saturday the 12th with 426 miles.

We’ve raised $149 towards our goal of $290.

It still not too late to sign up! Just go to http://dssf.org/dssf_html/sc and enter your first and last name, and the password [ask us], and then you can retroactively enter your miles of the month.

Saddle Challenge – 1st Update/Two Weeks down

The 2011 Saddle Challenge has just nine participants so far, but that has not kept riders from logging some miles. This update covers the first two weeks of the challenge, but it’s never too late to sign up. Just go to http://dssf.org/dssf_html/sc and enter your first and last name, and the password [ask us], and then you can retroactively enter your miles of the month.

As of yesterday, Danni Mestaz is leading the pack, one of three members with a 500 mile goal for the month! She is at 67% or 335 miles, ahead of everyone, way to go Danni! Great to see both a female AND a new member in the lead. Following closely both in mileage and percent of goal are Gordon Dinsdale, also a new member from Napa, followed by board member, David Goldsmith.

With mileage goals varying from 200 miles for the month (which is 50 miles a week, quite doable), up to 500 miles, the Saddle Challenge makes it easy for any member to participate and not feel like they have to a fast or high mileage rider to compete.

As a reminder, the Saddle Challenge is the club’s annual event in March to challenge each other to get out on our bikes and ride! Choose a goal for yourself: 100 miles, 300 miles, 900 miles…!
Whenever you come back on the SC page, you’ll be able to log your miles, watch your progress and see what other members are doing.

Don’t forget: every mile counts. So, if you commute with your bike, it’s even better!

The Saddle Challenge is also a way for members to raise money for Project Inform where Ron Wilmot, a long time DSSF member who started a fund-raising ride, the Ron Wilmot ride. You can choose to pledge per mile or a lump sum. Of course this part is entirely optional.

Again, just go to http://dssf.org/dssf_html/sc and enter your first and last name, and the password [ask us] to join up.

Other stats: 1,636 miles have been ridden so far. And we’ve raised $149.

Happy riding!

Saddle Challenge final results…

…are in!

Doug rode the most miles in March, with 703 miles, followed by Larry (483) and David Gaus (417).

David Goldsmith smashed his goal by more than 50%. Doug, Will and David all exceeded their goal. Larry, David Stouffer and Evan came very close!

For the second year in a row, Larry lead the most days of riding, with 12 days, followed by Doug (11) and David Stouffer (10).

The biggest day was March 21 with an impressive 385 miles, even more so since it didn’t include a double century!

Everyone who joined the challenge and rode during the month is a winner! Overall we completed 3,158 miles of the 3,340 total mileage goal with $320 raised for Project Inform by 10 participants!

Those who pledged money for Project Inform can send your check to the club PO box and they will be send in on the club’s behalf, in memory of Ron Wilmont.

Thanks to all who participated in this year’s Saddle Challenge. Great job everyone!

Saddle Challenge – Update #1

The challenge stared pretty well, thanks for some reprieve in the rainy weather, and the adventure of two challengers in the Death Valley.

Don’t forget, it not too late to sign up!
Just go to http://dssf.org/dssf_html/sc and enter your first and last name, and the password “SC2010”

Right now we have definitely two champions both in term of miles and % done: Doug and Larry who did the Death Valley double Century last Saturday! Doug completed the full 200 miles and Larry, more sensibly limited himself to 150. They both done more than 30% of their goal, well on their way.

David, David, Will and Jerome also got to accrue some miles on David & David’s “Bovine and Cowgirl” ride, which was fantastic, in spite of its excessive number of Davids 🙂
Last weekend, Joseph also lead a ride to the Cheese Factory, with even more miles, so you who joined his ride, why don’t you sign up?

Again, just go to http://dssf.org/dssf_html/sc and enter your first and last name, and the password “SC2010”.
You get more explanation on the blog and of course don’t hesitate to bug me if you have any problem.

Other stats:
561 miles have been ridden so far.
The two biggest days were of course Saturday with 344 miles and Sunday with 176 miles.
We raised $143.

Third week Saddle Challenge update!

So now it’s the end of the third week of the 2009 Saddle Challenge  (SC) and with 13 riders register now, we’re making progress. To be on target, those participating should be 71% complete.

Cameron has logged an impressive 93.5% of his goal miles, taking the lead, by percentage complete. Close on his heels are Doug (76.8%), and then the three DGs, David Goldsmith at (74.2%), myself (74.1%) and Dave Glidden (68%).

So far, 2,777 miles (52%) have been logged, our SC goal is 5,250 miles, despite some rainy days, we’re still within reach of making our goal!!

And the early forecast for this coming weekend looks good for getting some more saddle time in! Yes, I know that they also said that for this weekend too! ;-(

Or for the more adventurous, join Joseph for the Marshall Wall, 105 beautiful but challenging miles in Marin.

Next update will be after the 31st!

March Saddle Challenge is on!

But what is this Saddle Challenge, you ask?

The Saddle Challenge is an annual Different Spokes event, where each March we challenge each other to get out on our bikes and get some time in the saddle!

So choose a goal, for example, 25 miles per week x 4 weeks. Whatever you feel comfortable with, no goal it to small or too big, it’s your goal after all.

This is also a way for members to also (optionally) raise money for Project Inform. You can choose a per mile pledge or a lump sum figure. At the end of the month, we will ask those members who did pledge to mail their checks (made out to Project Inform) to the DSSF post office box, so we can send all money raised on behalf of Different Spokes?

Why? Because a long time member, Ron Wilmot, started the Ron Wilmot Ride for Project Inform, a fundraising event that no longer happens, but we continue to do our part each March. Again, the pledge portion is entirely optional!

So let’s challenge each other to get ourselves into shape, and have fun! Time to dust of that bike that’s been in the garage all winter, lube up the chain, pump up the tires and enjoy!

How do you sign up?

Go to DSSF home page and under Upcoming Events, click on The Saddle Challenge is on!

Just enter your First and Last name and the password (SC2009) to register, then enter your goal mileage, and optionally your per mile or lump sum pledge. Then log in after you ride (make sure you use the same name every time you log in), and choose thh date and enter the mileage. Try and get the mileage entered by each Sunday. I will be posting a weekly update here and on the DSSF Yahoo! Group.

–Let’s Ride!

The final results are in for the March Saddle Challenge…

The DSSF March Saddle challenge has come to a close and what a
spectacular month of riding it was for our participants! Larry
Litalien maintained the lead for the most miles ridden in March: 778!
Congratulations Larry! Jerome Thomere stayed in 2nd with 740 miles
and Will Bir hit 595 miles for 3rd place! Will & Jerome both did the
Solvang Double Century in March, thus they tied for the most miles
ridden in a single day: 192.5 miles – yikes!!!

Larry continued his almost daily riding routine throughout the month
for a total of 28 riding days! I was next with 27 days (in case you
haven’t guessed it, we both commute to work on our bikes).

The Saddle Challenge is also about achieving the mileage goals that
we set at the beginning of the month. Will topped that list at nearly
120%! Others that reached their mileage goals included Sharon Lum,
Larry Litalien, Jerome Thomere and myself. President Gaus and Don
Dodge came very close to theirs as well.

When participants registered for the Saddle Challenge, we gave them
the option to continue supporting Project Inform in the name of Ron
Wilmot – a former DSSF member. This could be done in a pledge per
mile basis or a fixed lump-sum contribution. Collectively we raised
over $500.00 this year!

Thanks to everyone that participated this March! We hope this has
helped to get you on your way to a great year of riding! Be sure to
continue watching the DSSF Ride Calendar for upcoming rides.

Viel Velovergnügen alle!
